If you buy FiveM scripts, you will see the words Asset Escrow on many listings. It is Cfx.re's system for protecting paid resources. Understanding it explains why downloads live in your account and why a script may refuse to run on the wrong server.
What Asset Escrow does
Escrow encrypts the protected code of a resource so it cannot be copied and resold. The encrypted resource only runs on a server whose license key belongs to the Cfx.re account that owns the asset, or to an account in the same organisation.
What stays editable
Authors choose which files are protected. Config files, translations and any files the author leaves open stay readable, so you can still change settings, texts and many behaviours. A good listing says exactly what is open and what is protected.
How you get an escrow script
- Buy it through the creator's Tebex store while signed in with your FiveM account.
- The asset is granted to your Cfx.re account.
- Download it from the Cfx.re Portal under your granted assets.
- Install it like any other resource and make sure your server uses a license key from the same account.
Why this matters when you buy
- Use the right account. Buying with an account that is not the one tied to your server key is the number one cause of escrow license errors.
- Teams and hosts. If several people manage the server, use an organisation so everyone's keys are covered.
- No sharing. Escrow is built to stop redistribution. Resold copies will not run, and buying from the creator is how you receive updates.
Troubleshooting escrow errors
If a protected resource will not start, verify the license key in server.cfg, confirm which account owns the asset, and restart the server. The full checklist is in FiveM script not starting.
